Feast of Fools 2018

The Shire of Roxbury Mill, raucous and ribald in its revelry, invites one and all to the third annual Feast of Fools on January 20, 2018, from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, Rockville, Maryland.

This is a feasting and games-only event, there are no martial or children’s activities. Each reveler needs to bring Feast Gear, or at a minimum of plate, bowl, cup, knife and spoon. This event is also BYOB under kingdom alcohol policy.

There WILL BE audience participation. It is not required, but may be difficult to avoid. Contests and dice games abound for wagering and competition. The one with the most “treasure” beads wins a prize at the end of the night. Like last year, there will be a bawdy bardic competition between the removes of the Feast. The performer who fills his grail with the most “Performance” beads wins. A Bonus will be awarded if the performance includes this year’s theme.

This year’s theme is inspired by the 14th Century poem “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.” As a pearl compares to a pea, we will be choosing a King and Queen of misrule as our “Arthur” and “Guinevere” to rule over the evening.

From Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Translated by J.R.R. Tolkien:

“While New Year was yet young that yestereve had arrived/that day double dainties on the dais were served/when the King (of Fools) was there, with his courtiers to the hall/…Noel announced anew, and named it full often;/then nobles ran anon with New Year’s gifts/ Handsels, Handsels they shouted, and handed them out, competing for those presents in playful debate…all this merriment they made, till their meat was served.”

**Please note the entertainment will be bawdy and not suitable for children.**
