August 5 Virtual Fencing Practice: Introduction To Spears

Virtual practice will be special this week, August 5!

The Shire will be hosting Count Barthelemy Illyria to lead an introductory workshop with spears!

Take note that this workshop is designed to be a crossover class for both heavy armored and rapier combatants. This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to expose themselves to spear combat and mechanics.
And for the fencing community, as spears are coming to a rapier melee near you*, now’s a great time to prepare.
Below is the Google Meet information:

Hippocras: History and Methodology

Learn how to make a delicious period beverage! Hippocras is a simple drink made by steeping spices in sweetened wine, documented to the 14th Century and popular for hundreds of years. This class will go over the general recipes and methods for producing this varient of mulled wine.

I will be demonstrating as well as discussing, and you’re welcome to join! You will need the following:

Equipment:
– 1 large mason jar
– mortar and pestle
– funnel
– kitchen scale or measuring spoons
– bottle stopper
– coffee filters or cheesecloth

Ingredients:
– 1 bottle of wine (I prefer a dry red like Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon)
– 1/2 tsp nutmeg
– 25 black peppercorns
– 4 cloves
– 1/4 tsp grains of paradise
– 1/2 tsp ground ginger or 1/2″ knob fresh ginger
– 1/2 tsp rosemary
– 3″ cinnamon stick
– 155g turbinado sugar

If you don’t have these exact spices, or have others you think would be tasty, feel free to substitute! At its core, this is a method more than a recipe.

Announcement: Virtual Skewered! Design Contest

Although pestilence travels across our lands, join the Shire of Roxbury Mill in a design contest to celebrate the best of their annual summer Skewered! event. Artists can compete by submitting designs that they feel capture the Shire’s annual event, to be used on t-shirts and tote bags for genuine Skewered! merchandise. The designs will be displayed on the Shire website and voted on by the Atlantian populace; two winners’ designs will be selected and will be available for purchase online. Children are encouraged to submit designs for Skewered! stickers that will be voted on by the Atlantian populace. The children’s sticker winner will also be available to purchase.

Even though we cannot gather together to stab and poke our friends this year, we hope that Atlantians will take this opportunity to be creative, support their artist friends, and create a t-shirt to be the envy of the kingdom! In addition we encourage the children of Atlantia to create a design for decal stickers to show off their creative side. The deadline for submissions is June 6th, after which designs will be publicized on the Shire of Roxbury Mill website and voting will become available via a Google Forms link. Winners will be announced live virtually on June 20th, and merchandise purchase links will become available.

How to Submit

If you are interested in participating, please submit a design (saved in .png file format) via email to skewered.roxburymill@gmail.com. Please include with your submission your SCA name and chapter, a completed creative use release form, and a few sentences on the inspiration for your design. For any children artists, they must also include their SCA membership number, or complete the children’s activities release form and return it. Any submitted design will be posted/publicized for voting purposes.
